Scarlett the vervet monkey

Scarlett was given to us by the veterinary clinic in Windhoek. The vervet monkey grew up on a chain in the back yard of a family in town that kept her like their pet.

Since we have never had vervet monkeys on the farm before, we quickly improvised a small and temporary camp for her, where she could stay for the first days.

She was picked up and a quick health check was performed after consulting with our vet Ian Baines. We were a bit worried because she had spent her life until then on a chain, so it was important to see if everything was ok.

Scarlett definitely has a strong character and she did not like it at all when Rudie darted her. She immediately started screaming and pulled the dart out of her as soon as it hit her. She then looked at Rudie and tried to attack him as if he was her worst enemy. Needless to say is that Rudie and Scarlett are not best friends...

But only a few minutes later she was asleep and we could have a good look at her.

Luckily, Scarlett was perfectly fine, and a couple of days later we were able to build a nice big camp for her which she loves and so she has become a permanent resident of the wildlife sanctuary!

Scarlett is now also available for adoption, so if you would like to adopt this beautiful animal, please email donations@naankuse.com
